Ceramide for skin care

Ceramide is the main component (> 50%) of the lipid in stratum corneum cells of skin, which retains water and protect against outside irritation as functions of skin moistening and protection. Ceramide from rice bran mainly exists in the form of sphingolipids and its 1-hydroxy connects glucose by glucoside bonds. It is generally accepted that the intercellular lipid domain is composed of approximately equimolar concentrations of free fatty acids, cholesterol, and ceramides. Ceramides are a structurally heterogeneous and complex group of sphingolipids containing derivatives of sphingosine bases in amide linkage with a variety of fatty acids. There are over 20 types of sphingolipids from rice bran, and the fatty acid of the most popular 4(see below)linked by imide bonds is more common, namely linoleic acid, oleic acid, Stearic acid and palmtic acid. Different from skin ceramide, the sphingosines of ceramide from rice bran contain 4- and 8-double bonds, referred to as (4E,8E/Z)-spinga-4,8-dienine.Mainly used in whitening and moisturizing.

As aging and entering seniority the amount of ceramide decreases, to which abnormity such as dry and rough skin occurs due, to take ceramide supplement makes an ideal method to prevent against those defects. most skin disorders that have a diminished barrier function present a decrease in total ceramide content with some differences in the ceramide pattern. Formulations containing lipids identical to those in skin and, in particular, some ceramide supplementation could improve disturbed skin conditions. Incomplete lipid mixtures yield abnormal lamellar body contents, and disorder intercellular lamellae, whereas complete lipid mixtures result in normal lamellar bodies and intercellular bilayers. The utilization of physiological lipids according to these parameters have potential as new forms of topical therapy for dermatoses. An alternative strategy to improving barrier function by topical application of the various mature lipid species is to enhance the natural lipid-synthetic capability of the epidermis through the topical delivery of lipid precursors.
