What Is the Difference Between Dextrose, Fructose, and Glucose?

Dextrose, fructose, and glucose are all monosaccharides, known as simple sugars. These sugars can combine to form more complex sugars, including the disaccharide known as sucrose, or table sugar. The primary differences between these sugars have to do with the ways in which they are metabolized by the body, and they all play important roles in body function.
Fructose is an extremely sweet sugar that is found in many fruits. The flavor is sometimes intensely cloying, as anyone who has eaten an overripe piece of fruit knows, and it is believed to be the most sweet of the naturally occurring sugars. Fructose can also be obtained through the breakdown of sucrose, which is made from linked fructose and glucose molecules. It has a low glycemic index, which means that it takes a long time for the body to break down, resulting in a slow release of sugar, rather than a sudden rush. A diet high in fructose as been linked to health problems like diabetes and obesity, although there is as of yet no proof that it causes these conditions.
Dextrose is simply a form of glucose. Some food packagers like to use "dextrose" on their packaging instead of "glucose" because they believe that people have negative associations with glucose. This sugar is extremely abundant in nature, and it can be found in numerous plant and animal tissues, often along with other sugars such as fructose. The body relies on glucose for energy, using this sugar to power cells. When people measure their blood sugar, they are actually measuring the amount of dissolved glucose in the blood.
The molecular formula for glucose/dextrose and fructose is actually the same. Both sugars are considered to be hexoses, meaning that they have six carbon atoms attached to 12 hydrogen atoms and six oxygen atoms. The differing ways in which molecules can be attached cause various hexoses to behave differently, creating different chemical compounds which lend the hexoses some distinct properties.
Glucose is what is known as an aldohexose, meaning that it contains a compound called an aldehyde, located at the first position in the molecule. Aldehydes have a carbon atom which is attached to a hydrogen atom and also double bonded to an oxygen atom. Fructose, on the other hand, is a ketohexose, containing a ketone which consists of a single carbon atom double bonded to an oxygen atom. The ketone in fructose is attached to the second position in the molecule. Ketones play an important role in biochemistry.
The simple structures of these sugars allow them to be linked in a number of different ways to other molecules, creating more complex sugars which will behave differently in the body and generating some extremely unwieldy chemical formulas. For consumers, the important thing to remember is that labels which say "dextrose" really mean "glucose."

How is Coffee Decaffeinated?

Decaffeinated coffee has long been in demand as many people enjoy the taste of coffee, but either can’t or shouldn’t ingest caffeine. There are several processes that can make coffee decaffeinated. Most today use water decaffeination because it is considered to be the healthiest process.
One of the earliest methods to produce decaffeinated coffee resulted in the coffee brand Sanka. This method, which steams the coffee in brine and then applies benzene to the beans, is now considered highly unsafe. Benzene is a dangerous chemical with one of its other application being its use in early Napalm. Sanka no longer uses this method to produce decaffeinated coffee.
The direct method steams the beans for half an hour and then rinses the coffee beans with ethyl acetate or methylene chloride. After the chemicals are drained, the beans are then steamed again. When this process uses ethyl acetate derived from fruit or vegetables, the coffee is said to be naturally decaffeinated.
Instead of steaming the coffee beans, the water method or the indirect method soaks the beans in water. The water is then drained and either ethyl acetate or methylene chloride is added. These chemicals evaporate as the beans undergo intense heat. The beans then take another bath in water that is reused because it is thought to contain the essential flavor and oils of the coffee. This indirect method is often thought preferable for obtaining decaffeinated coffee, though coffee enthusiasts argue that the process compromises taste.
A variant of the water method employs a charcoal filter instead of chemicals to produce decaffeinated coffee. The charcoal is normally coated with a carbohydrate solvent, as well as water. This is thought to prevent the charcoal from absorbing not only the caffeine but also the flavor of the coffee.
The carbon dioxide method is thought to most effectively result in decaffeinated coffee. The beans are steamed and then soaked in carbonated water. The water is then drained through a charcoal filter. One final process soaks green coffee beans in a water and coffee solution to remove the caffeine.
Most coffee companies will now be happy to share information about the process they use to make decaffeinated coffee. Many natural food stores now boast naturally decaffeinated coffees that use either the water or charcoal method. For those who must completely avoid caffeine, it is important to note that decaffeinated coffee contains a residual amount of caffeine. Caffeine is about 97% reduced by decaffeination processes, but decaffeinated coffee is not completely caffeine-free.

Gamma-mangostin

Gamma-mangostin(31271-07-5), is a component of mangosteen, and is apparently a good, natural anti-estrogen, purified from the fruit hull of the medicinal plant Garcinia mangostana caused a parallel rightwards shift of the concentration/response curve for the contraction elicited by 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) in the rabbit aorta (pA2 = 8.2) without affecting the contractile responses to KCl, phenylephrine (alpha1) or histamine (H1). The perfusion pressure response of rat coronary artery to 5-HT (5-HT2A) was reduced concentration dependently by gamma-mangostin (IC50 = 0.32 microM). 5-HT amplified, ADP-induced aggregation of rabbit platelets (5-HT2A) was inhibited by gamma-mangostin (IC50 = 0.29 microM), whereas that induced by thrombin was not affected, nor did gamma-mangostin affect 5-HT-induced contraction of the guinea-pig ileum (5-HT3)in the presence of 5-HT1, 5-HT2 and 5-HT4 receptor antagonists. Furthermore, 5-HT-induced contraction of the rat fundus (5-HT2B) and 5-HT-induced relaxation of the rabbit aorta in the presence of ketanserin (5-HT1) and carbachol-induced contraction of the guinea-pig ileum (muscarinic M3) were not affected by gamma-mangostin (5 microM). Gamma-mangostin inhibited [3H]spiperone binding to cultured rat aortic myocytes (IC50 = 3.5 nM). The Kd for [3H]spiperone binding was increased by gamma-mangostin (3 nM) from 11.7 to 27.4 nM without affecting Bmax. These results suggest that gamma-mangostin is a novel competitive antagonist, free from a nitrogen atom, for the 5-HT2A receptors in vascular smooth muscles and platelets.

In another research, Aberrant activation of Wnt/β-catenin signalling via genetic errors within β-catenin or APC has a crucial role in carcinogenesis. Here, we studied two xanthones, α- and γ-mangostin, as inhibitors of Wnt/β-catenin signalling. The mangostins inhibited TCF/β-catenin transcriptional activity. The mangostins also inhibited protein expression of β-catenin in colon cancer cells, but the inhibition was independent of the phosphorylation and degradation of β-catenin. Instead, the mangostins increased the levels of cGMP and cGMP-dependent kinase, indicating that the inhibition of β-catenin resulted from β-catenin gene regulation. Our results indicate that mangostins could be potential candidates for preventing colon cancer through a novel mechanism of inhibiting Wnt/β-catenin signalling.

Pine Bark Extract

Pine bark extract is made from the bark of the maritime pine tree .The scientific name is Pinus maritime, which contains naturally occurring chemicals called proanthocyanidins. It’s well known that people can use to benefit their health duet to it’s a kind of antioxidant is wonderful for the human body.

It can be used for hypertension.58 patients in a placebo-controlled, double-blind, parallel group study were  investigated effects of pine bark extract, Pycnogenol, on patients with hypertension. Supplementation of the patients with 100 mg pine bark extract over a period of 12 weeks helped to reduce the dose of the calcium antagonist nifedipine in a statistically significant manner. The intake of pine bark extract decreased endothelin-1 concentrations significantly compared to placebo while concentrations of 6-keto prostaglandin F1a in plasma were significantly higher compared to placebo. Values for nitric oxide (NO) in plasma increased in both groups, but the differences were not significant. Angiotensin II concentrations in plasma were lowered in the placebo group to a larger extent than in the pine bark extract group. Heart rate, electrolytes and blood urea nitrogen were not changed during treatment in both groups of patients. Unwanted effects observed in both groups were of mild and transient nature, such as gastrointestinal problems, vertigo, headache and nausea.

Moreover, many studies have been conducted on the use and benefits of pine bark extract and some of the studies have shown that it has proven beneficial in lowering blood sugar levels in patients suffering from diabetes. It may also help reduce swelling in those suffering from a condition called chronic venous insufficiency. So a lot of people believe that the antioxidant components of the pine bark extract offer many other benefits as well. In addition, pine bark extract has been reported to be safe. Few people report mild problems such as headache, nausea, and upset stomach. Not much is known about possible interactions with other drugs and herbs. Depending on the person’s size, age and needs for the pine bark extract, dosages may vary from person to person.

Phenibut nervous system

Phenibut is a “nootropic” drug that has several effects on the body and nervous system. A nootropic drug is one that enhances memory or stimulates specific areas of the brain. It has also been used to treat conditions like anxiety and insomnia.

The technical name for the drug is Beta-phenyl-gamma-aminobutyric acid. It is a derivative of Gamma Amino Butyric Acid or GABA, a neurotransmitter. A nervous system regulator, GABA (and its derived products like Phenibut) has been shown to have some predictive effects that make these chemicals useful for some kinds of treatments.

According to medical sources, this drug was originally a “cosmonaut’s medicine.” Reports cite the I. M. Herzen Leningrad Institute” in the former Soviet Union as one of the first places that Phenibut was synthesized. Russian space explorers took forms of this chemical to help them handle the demands of their jobs.

In modern medicine, Phenibut is shown to lower blood pressure and to have other related effects. There are some side effects, including effects of withdrawal, where blood pressure can spike, and anxiety and insomnia can result. Researchers are still looking at how drugs like Phenibut can contribute to better control of nervous system conditions.

Doctors sometimes use drugs like these to treat post-traumatic stress disorder in military workers and other patients. This drug is also something that doctors can prescribe for those with specific kinds of anxiety, including social anxiety. It can even help with other conditions, like stuttering.
In forums related to the above conditions and the use of pharmacology, individuals are trying to educate the public on potential side effects of the drug. It is important for patients to understand the risks and benefits before embarking on treatment with Phenibut or a related drug. Consumer advocates point out that not all popular uses of these kinds of drugs are specifically FDA approved and that more attention to clinical trials may be necessary.

Government medical information sources provide more information on the pharmacology of Phenibut. Information about this drug has also made its way to the fitness community. Some apparently feel that Phenibut can be useful for athletes because of its relaxing properties. Bodybuilding forums include comments on the drug by individual users, including those who buy it over the counter. Although similar drugs can be bought over the counter, because of reported side effects, individuals should always seek medical consultation before medicating with it.

Artemisia annua oil lung and thyroid cancers

The purported medical uses of artemisia annua include treatment for malaria, infections, fever, inflammation, bleeding, headaches and cancer, particularly some lung and thyroid cancers. The ingredient in artemisia annua that helps treat malaria is artemisinin, and it works as well as the traditional treatment of quinine in many cases, but it remains unproven if it also works on quinine-resistant malaria cases. Some studies of artemisinin show that the herb holds promise as a treatment for certain infections, including African sleeping sickness.

Artemisia annua is also known by the names absinthium, annual wormwood, sweet wormwood, Sweet Annie and Qing Hao. Chinese medicine has long made use of this herb in the treatment of malaria, inflammation and fevers. In cases of malaria treatment, however, the likelihood of recurrence increased more than if the traditional quinine treatment had been employed. A modern day study has shown that artemisia annua can be helpful for patients who suffer from persistent bladder infections.
In Chinese medicine, different parts of the plant are used for different medicinal purposes. The seeds are given as a remedy for indigestion and excess gas. The leaves are used to make a poultice or dressing to treat nosebleeds and abscesses. The leaves are also used outside of the medical field to provide flavor to vermouth, and their oil has been used to give a pleasant aroma to some perfumes. The plant also has been used in the winemaking process in China, and crafters around the world enjoy the plant for its pleasant aroma, including sprigs in wreaths, bouquets and other homemade decorative items.

Artemisia annua is not recommended for people who take anti-seizure drugs because the herb can cause seizures. People with gastrointestinal problems or ulcers also should avoid the herb because it creates excess acid in the stomach. Side effects of this herb can include dermatitis, a loss of appetite, stomach pain, nausea and diarrhea. The plant’s pollen has been known to cause allergic reactions, which can include headaches. Patients who want to add artemisia annua to their healthcare regimen should consult their physician because of the associated risks and the herb’s allergic properties. Diabetics and pregnant women also should exercise caution and consult their physicians before using this herb.

How Do I Choose the Best Eye Drops for Infection?

Choose the best eye drops for infection according to the type of infection you have, for example, bacterial or viral. Eyes are sensitive and delicate, so only well-known and trusted brands of eye drops should be used. Visit your eye doctor for a diagnosis and obtain a prescription for the best type of eye drops for the particular infection you have. For regular known infections such as conjunctivitis, over-the-counter eye drops containing ingredients such as chloramphenicol, can be rapidly effective. If symptoms persist, visit your eye doctor.
If you are suffering from a condition that is new or unknown to you, be sure to consult your doctor or eye specialist. The best eye drops for infection in this case will be chosen by your doctor dependent on your diagnosis. Eye infections can be classified as fungal, bacterial, viral or parasitic, and often an effective treatment can only be obtained by prescription.
Use trial and error to choose a brand of eye drops for infection that work best for you. Ask friends and family which eye drops they prefer. Speak to your pharmacist as they are knowledgeable on minor eye infections, and can advise you on the most effective treatment and any new products on the market. Choose the best eye drops for infection according to the speed at which they claim to be effective. Three to five day treatment times are normal. Ensure that the product has been thoroughly tested and comes with comprehensive safety instructions. Only buy eye drops for infection from a known and trusted pharmacist or drug store, and never purchase medications or miracle cures from unknown websites or traders. If your symptoms have not improved after two days, you may not be using the best treatment and you should consult your eye doctor.
The best eye drops for infections should not cause allergic reactions, burning or stinging. Well known over-the-counter eye drops for infections usually contain chloramphenicol which is a type of antibiotic. This is best for treating bacterial eye infections because it is effective against a wide range of bacteria and is possibly the best choice for regular known infections such as bacterial conjunctivitis.
Viral conjunctivitis varies in severity and often goes away on its own. Use lubricating eye drops to reduce soreness. Some typical symptoms of eye infection such as itching and redness can actually be caused by allergies. In this case, lubricating eye drops can be used along with allergy medicines as recommended by your doctor or pharmacist. Fungal eye infections can be treated with corticosteroid eye drops. These drops, available on prescription, can cause glaucoma if repeatedly used in the long term.
